Next a plinth is made from half of a firebrick by cutting cross "V" grooves in the bottom. This is placed over the bottom vent hole. The crucible (#4) sits on this plinth. The #10 crucible sits directly on the furnace floor. Four notches were formed in the edge of the lower vent hole to provide a path for the hot gasses to get around the base of the crucible.
